The Roze Filmdagen Picks of Sunny Jansen

Sunny Jansen is an activist, DJ and PR professional. With a strong connection to Amsterdam's nightlife from the 90s to the present, she is a local star who has been working hard for the community since day one.

Roze Filmdagen spoke to Jansen and went through her film program with the question which films she definitely did not want to miss and why.

“I’ve been familiar with the House of Xtravaganza since the 90s, partly because of the film Paris Is Burning. I met Giselle Xtravaganza in N.Y. two years ago, so I recognized her in the trailer. I’m especially curious to learn more about Venus Xtravaganza."

I don’t know many films that focus on gay sex work. In my early (night)life, I met many gay sex workers. I got to know a few personally, and I’ve also lost some along the way. One person, in particular, was very special to me back then. Sadly, he was murdered.

"Very curious about the ballroom scene in Rio. I once attended Pride São Paulo with Milkshake Festival. Sadly, the reality is that most trans women of color are sex workers whose lives hang by a thread every day. During Trans Day of Remembrance, we remember many murdered trans women in Brazil. Ballroom is a safe haven for the community amidst this harsh reality."
