The Roze Filmdagen Picks of Maurits de Bruijn
Maurits de Bruijn is a writer and podcaster. His first novel came out in 2012, titled Broer and was followed by other works such as De achterkant van de zon (2016), and Man maakt stuk (2024), as well as the non-fiction work Ook mijn Holocaust (2020) about identity and family history. In addition to his books, he writes for publications such as De Volkskrant and Trouw and is an editor at the art magazine Mister Motley. His work often revolves around themes of identity, family, and trauma.
Roze Filmdagen gave de Bruijn a sneak peek into the program of its 28th edition with the question: 'Which films from Roze Filmdagen 2025 would you like to see and why?'
"The concept of a writer intrigues me deeply. Where research and posing end and blend into real life is something I, as a writer, also explore. The trailer and story felt very close, even if not entirely connected with the plot and subject."

"I appreciate that it focuses on the ‘aftermath’ of being trans. That the struggle does not lie with him but rather with his surroundings. How the environment changes when someone fundamentally transforms or starts living their own truth."

"Violence in film always intrigues me. From what I got from the trailer, violence and dominance also play a role in love interests. In every relationship, some form of dominance is at play."

"I have been to São Paulo myself, which might be why this interests me. I get the sense that sex work is not portrayed in an overly stigmatizing way, which I find important."

"I am interested in stories that encompass the full spectrum of human emotions. This one seems to have humor, tension, and a sense of ease, but also a group of friends playfully teasing each other. I find that kind of storytelling very challenging to pull off. It seems to have a dreamy and highly visual dimension."

"I enjoy historical stories that allow you to immerse yourself in nostalgia as if you could rewrite history. It also seems very romantic, in a good way."

"This one seems very contemporary, with a modern take on what gaming means for queer people. It feels very of the moment, and the trailer looks very artsy."
